Pacific Beach Crystal Pier Family Photography in San Diego

Crystal Pier is one of the most recognizable spots in San Diego for family photos. Below you will find practical details and tips to help you decide if Pacific Beach fits your family and your session style.

Pacific Beach, or PB as locals call it, is one of my favorite beaches to photograph engagement and family sessions in San Diego. It is a large beach, and my favorite area for photography sessions is around Crystal Pier. This area allows for classic beach photos, and the pier also gives us a great place to explore.

Pacific Beach has a laid back beach town vibe with a vibrant beach culture. It has that classic California feel you see in movies, with a boardwalk, bars, restaurants, and lots of people riding bikes and skates, exercising, and enjoying the beach.

One of the main reasons I recommend Pacific Beach for family and engagement sessions is the pier. Crystal Pier is part of Pacific Beach history. Built in 1927, the wooden structure brings a vintage and rustic feel to the photos. The pier works beautifully for walking shots, something I always incorporate into family sessions, and it also filters the light when the sun is low, giving us soft afternoon light.

Pacific Beach is one of the busiest beaches in San Diego. There are a few public parking lots near Crystal Pier, but street parking is often needed. Finding a spot can be difficult, especially during the summer.

I recommend choosing a weekday for Pacific Beach family sessions, particularly in summer and early fall. Weekends can be crowded, which makes sessions a little harder. Weekdays are more manageable and give us more room to move around.

Pacific Beach also has a variety of cafes and restaurants if your family wants to grab something after the session or reward the kids. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream at 4475 Mission Blvd is my favorite nearby treat and it is very close to Crystal Pier.

During Pacific Beach sessions, I usually start with some photos under Crystal Pier, then move toward the shoreline. I typically begin north of the pier and, if time allows, continue south. We do not need to go far from the pier, which makes Pacific Beach convenient for most families.

Meeting Point

I usually meet clients for Pacific Beach family sessions at the entrance to Crystal Pier. Crystal Pier is located at the west end of Garnet Avenue, one of the main streets in Pacific Beach. You can also click here to view the exact meeting point on the map.

Access

Pacific Beach is one of the busiest neighborhoods in San Diego. Parking is limited and can be difficult to find, especially on weekends and during the summer. I recommend arriving early so you have enough time to park before the session.

If you have trouble finding parking on Garnet Avenue, try the streets north of the pier, which usually have more availability than the south side. If you have small children, elderly family members, or a lot to carry, it can help to drop part of the group off before looking for a parking spot.

Please note that you need to go down stairs to access the beach and reach the shoreline and pier. Because of this, Pacific Beach may not be the best option if someone in the group has difficulty walking.

Best Time for Photos in Pacific Beach

Like most beaches in California, the best time for photography is the last hour before sunset, often called golden hour. Beach sessions can happen early in the morning, but sunset light is usually the most flattering. Weekdays also tend to work best since Pacific Beach can be very busy.

Outfits

Going barefoot works very well for beach sessions. It looks natural during walking photos and helps create a relaxed feel. Choose clothing that fits your style but is comfortable. Light fabrics and neutral tones usually photograph best. Large logos and bold patterns can be distracting.

Coordinating colors between family members helps, but everyone does not need to match.

Pets

Dogs are allowed on the beach and boardwalk in Pacific Beach before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm from April 1 through October 31, and before 9:00 am and after 4:00 pm from November 1 through March 31. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Please confirm these rules online since they may change.

Pets are always welcome in my family sessions.
