Congratulations on your engagement! My name is Julio Fonyat, and I have been a San Diego engagement photographer for nearly two decades. An engagement session is one of the most meaningful experiences you can have before your wedding day — it is a chance to celebrate this chapter of your lives, get comfortable in front of the camera, and create images you will genuinely treasure forever.

San Diego Engagement Photography — Locations, Style & What to Expect

San Diego is one of the most stunning places in the world for an engagement session. From the dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters of La Jolla to the wide sandy shores of Carlsbad, the lush canyon trails of Encinitas, and the architectural beauty of Balboa Park, there is a perfect location in San Diego for every couple and every style.

Some of my favorite San Diego engagement photography locations include La Jolla Shores and Scripps Pier, Marian Bear Trail, Petco Park, Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, and Crystal Cove. I also love shooting at locations that are personal and meaningful to you — a neighborhood you love, a coffee shop where you had your first date, or anywhere that feels like the two of you.

Engagement sessions also serve an incredibly practical purpose — they give us the chance to work together before your wedding day so you feel completely comfortable and confident in front of my camera when it matters most. Many of my wedding clients use their engagement photos for save the dates, wedding websites, and display prints at their reception.

San Diego Engagement Photography — Frequently Asked Questions

  • San Diego has incredible variety for engagement photography. Some of my most popular spots include La Jolla Shores and Scripps Pier, Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, Marian Bear Trail, Petco Park, and Carlsbad State Beach. I am always happy to suggest a location based on your style and vision, or shoot somewhere meaningful to you as a couple.

  • The best light for engagement photography in San Diego is during the golden hour, which is the hour before sunset. The soft, warm light at this time of day is incredibly flattering and creates a natural, glowing look in photos. Morning sessions are also available for couples who prefer earlier light or want to avoid crowds at popular locations.

  • Most engagement sessions last between one and two hours. This gives us enough time to shoot at one or two locations, try a few different looks, and capture a strong variety of images without feeling rushed. I will guide you through the entire session so it feels natural and enjoyable from start to finish.

  • Absolutely — and I highly recommend it. An engagement session is the best way for us to get comfortable working together before your wedding day. You will feel more relaxed, natural, and confident in front of the camera on your wedding day, which makes a real difference in your final images.

  • Yes! Pets are always welcome. I love working with animals and will make sure we get plenty of great shots with your furry family members included.
