Old Poway Park Family Photography Sessions in San Diego

Old Poway Park is one of the most unique locations for family photography sessions in San Diego. If you’re looking for something different from the beach, this park offers a charming, rustic setting with a lot of character. It has a historic, almost old town feel that makes it stand out from other locations I recommend for San Diego family photos.

Located in Poway, part of North County San Diego, Old Poway Park is designed to recreate a turn-of-the-century town. It features wooden buildings, a vintage train, open grassy areas, and tree-lined paths that work really well for photos. It’s a great option for families who want a warm, natural look with a bit more personality than a traditional park.

One of the biggest advantages of Old Poway Park for family photography is the variety it offers in a relatively compact area. We can use rustic wooden structures, fences, and buildings for a more textured background, then move to open grassy areas or shaded paths for softer, more natural shots. This allows us to create a full gallery with a lot of variety without needing to walk long distances.

This location has a very relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. It’s popular with locals, especially on weekends, but it usually doesn’t feel overwhelming. There are plenty of quieter areas throughout the park that work really well for photos, even when it’s a bit busier.

Old Poway Park works especially well for families with younger kids. The setting feels playful and open, which helps kids stay engaged and comfortable during the session. It’s also a great option for couples, and one of my favorite spots for engagement sessions in San Diego. The rustic buildings and natural surroundings create a timeless look that works really well for couples.

Another big advantage of this location is accessibility. Unlike many trail or beach locations in San Diego, Old Poway Park requires very little walking. Most areas are easy to reach, and the flat terrain makes it a great option for families with strollers or anyone who prefers a more convenient setup.

Lighting at Old Poway Park is best in the late afternoon, about one hour before sunset. The light filters nicely through the trees and buildings, creating a soft and warm look that works really well for family photos. Morning sessions can also work well, especially if you’re looking for a quieter experience.

Important Note About November and December Sessions at Old Poway Park

Old Poway Park can become very difficult to use for photography sessions during November and December, especially on Fridays and weekends.

Because it’s a smaller park with a limited number of strong photo locations, it tends to attract a high number of photographers during the holiday season. Most of the best spots are very obvious, which often leads to multiple photographers trying to use the same areas at the same time.

It’s not uncommon to see lines of photographers waiting to use certain locations, and in some cases, photographers may occupy a spot for extended periods while rotating through multiple families. This makes it difficult to move efficiently through the session and limits the variety we can create.

When that happens, sessions can start to feel rushed, less productive, and not as enjoyable, especially for families with kids.

For this reason, I do not recommend scheduling sessions at Old Poway Park on Fridays or weekends during November and December.

Better options during this time:

• Weekday sessions earlier in the week

• Morning sessions (less crowded, but still something to consider)

• Choosing an alternative location with more space

Outside of the holiday season, Old Poway Park works very well and remains one of my favorite rustic locations for family photography in San Diego.

Meeting Point:

For Old Poway Park family photography sessions, I usually meet clients at the Poway Depot, which is the small train station building where tickets are sold inside the park. You can click here to view the exact meeting location on the map.

From there, we can easily access all the main areas of the park and start the session right away.

Access:

Old Poway Park is one of the easiest locations to access in San Diego. There is a large parking lot nearby, and parking is typically very manageable, even on weekends.

The park is mostly flat and very walkable, making it a great option for families with strollers or anyone who prefers minimal walking.

Best Time for Photos in Old Poway Park:

The best time for photography at Old Poway Park is the last hour before sunset. The warm light during this time complements the rustic tones of the buildings and surroundings.

Morning sessions are also a good option, especially for families with younger kids or if you’re looking for a quieter setting.

Outfits:

Old Poway Park pairs really well with neutral and earthy tones. Colors like beige, cream, olive green, light blue, and soft browns tend to work very well with the rustic surroundings.

For this location, slightly more dressed-up outfits can look great, but casual outfits also work perfectly. The key is to keep things comfortable and coordinated without being too matchy.

Avoid large logos or very bold patterns, as they can take attention away from the natural feel of the location.

Pets:

Old Poway Park is a dog-friendly location, and pets are welcome during sessions. Dogs must be on a leash at all times.

If you’re planning to bring your pet, I recommend having someone available to help, so we can take a few photos without them as well.

Old Poway Park is a great option for families looking for something different from the typical San Diego beach session.
