Solana Beach Trails Family Photography Sessions | San Diego Family Photographer

The San Elijo Lagoon trail system near Solana Beach is one of the most naturally beautiful and underrated photography locations in all of North County San Diego. Known to locals as the Annie's Canyon trail area, this stretch of coastal trail runs along the edge of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve — one of Southern California's largest remaining coastal wetlands — and offers a photography environment that is completely different from anything a beach or park session can provide. As a San Diego family photographer and Carlsbad wedding photographer who photographs sessions at this location regularly, it is one of my favorite natural trail settings in the entire region — and one that consistently produces some of the most organic, relaxed, and visually distinctive galleries of any location I work at.

For families who enjoy the outdoors and want something genuinely different from a beach session — something with texture, natural character, and a quiet, unhurried atmosphere — the Solana Beach Trails are an exceptional choice. It is also one of my favorite locations for San Diego engagement sessions, where the natural surroundings and open trail create a relaxed, candid portrait environment that feels completely personal and unhurried. Below you will find everything you need to know to plan your Solana Beach Trails family photography session.

About the Solana Beach Trails as a Photography Location

The section of trail I use for family photography sessions sits in the flat, accessible area near the North Rios Avenue trailhead — well before any significant elevation change or the narrow canyon sections that the trail is perhaps best known for. This part of the trail runs along the lagoon's edge through open coastal sage scrub, with wide views of the San Elijo Lagoon stretching out to one side and dense, textured native vegetation lining the other. The trail itself is a natural dirt path — wide, flat, and comfortable to walk at a relaxed pace, though it is uneven in places as you would expect from a natural trail setting.

What makes this location so compelling for photography is the combination of natural elements that are genuinely rare in a single accessible location. The open lagoon views provide a sense of space and light that gives wide portrait shots a dramatic, open-sky backdrop. The dense coastal vegetation — native shrubs, tall grasses, wildflowers in season, and the occasional fallen log — creates a series of naturally textured and layered portrait environments along the trail that feel completely organic rather than staged. The dirt path itself, winding gently through the landscape, is one of the most natural and inviting settings for candid walking photographs of any location I work at in North County San Diego.

Unlike a beach session where the backdrop is relatively consistent from one end to the other, the Solana Beach trail gives us genuine variety within a single comfortable walk — open lagoon views, shaded vegetated sections, textured natural elements, and the soft coastal light that filters through the native plants in the late afternoon. It is a location that rewards movement and exploration, and it consistently produces galleries with a natural, lived-in quality that more formal or manicured settings cannot replicate.

What to Expect During a Solana Beach Trails Session

A Solana Beach Trails session begins at the North Rios Avenue trailhead and moves along the flat lagoon-side section of the trail at a comfortable, unhurried pace. We typically cover a gentle stretch of trail during the session, stopping at spots along the way that offer the best combination of light, background, and natural elements — a section of open lagoon view here, a textured wall of native vegetation there, a fallen log or a shaded trail bend that creates a natural frame for the family.

The session feels more like a relaxed walk outdoors than a formal photo shoot — which is precisely why it works so well, particularly for families with younger children who need movement and engagement to photograph naturally. I always tell families that the best images from this location come from the moments between the posed shots — children exploring the trail ahead, parents walking hand in hand, the natural interactions that happen when a family is simply enjoying being outdoors together. The Solana Beach trail creates that environment effortlessly, and my job is to be ready for those moments as they happen.

One important note about accessibility: The trail is a natural dirt path and is uneven in places, which is normal for a trail of this type. While the section I use involves no climbing or significant elevation change, it is not a paved or fully flat surface. If anyone in your family has mobility limitations or difficulty with uneven terrain, this may not be the most comfortable location — and I am always happy to suggest an alternative that works better for your family's needs. For families who are comfortable on a natural dirt trail, the walk is easy and completely manageable at a relaxed pace.

Best Photography Spots Along the Solana Beach Trail

Open Lagoon Views

The sections of trail that open up along the lagoon's edge are some of the most visually expansive and photographically striking moments of any session here. The wide, open water of the San Elijo Lagoon stretching out behind the family, the coastal sky above, and the soft natural light of the late afternoon combine to create wide portrait shots with a sense of space and place that is completely unique to this location. These are the images that tell you exactly where you are — the natural beauty of the Southern California coastline, captured in a way that a beach session rarely achieves.

The Vegetated Trail Sections

The sections of trail lined with dense native vegetation on both sides are among my favorite portrait environments at this location. The layered greens of the coastal sage scrub, the texture of the native plants, and the way the late afternoon light filters through the vegetation create a soft, natural backdrop that is deeply flattering for family portraits. These sections also feel the most private and enclosed — a natural corridor of greenery that gives the session an intimate, exploratory quality that families consistently respond well to.

Fallen Logs and Natural Elements

One of the distinctive features of this trail that I genuinely love as a San Diego family photographer is the presence of fallen logs and other natural elements along the path. A fallen log is one of the most naturally inviting portrait props available — children sit on them, climb them, lean against them, and interact with them in completely spontaneous ways that produce some of the most genuine and alive images of any session. Parents sitting together on a log while children play around them, a toddler being helped up by an older sibling, the whole family perched together in a natural woodland setting — these are the images that end up on walls and in albums, and the Solana Beach trail delivers them naturally without any staging required.

The Trail Path Itself

The dirt trail winding gently through the landscape is one of the simplest and most effective portrait environments at this location. Walking shots along the trail — the family moving together away from the camera, or coming toward it, or simply walking side by side while I photograph from alongside them — have a natural, documentary quality that is completely native to this kind of outdoor setting. The trail gives the session a natural direction and momentum, and the walking shots it produces are consistently some of the most relaxed and genuine images in the final gallery.

Meeting Point

For Solana Beach Trails family photography sessions, I meet clients at the end of North Rios Avenue in Solana Beach, right at the trail entrance. Parking is available on the street near the cul-de-sac at the end of North Rios Avenue. Click here to view the exact meeting location on the map.

I will send you detailed arrival and parking instructions closer to your session date so everything is smooth and easy on the day

Access

The Solana Beach trail entrance at North Rios Avenue is easy to reach from most of North County San Diego — Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, and Carlsbad are all within a short drive. From the freeway, take the Lomas Santa Fe Drive exit off I-5 heading west, then turn right on North Rios Avenue and follow it to the end of the street.

Street parking is available near the cul-de-sac at the trail entrance and is generally manageable, though it can fill up on busy weekend afternoons. I always recommend arriving five to ten minutes early to allow time to park and get settled before the session begins.

As noted above, the trail is a natural dirt path and is uneven in places. It involves no climbing or significant elevation gain in the section I use for sessions, but it is not a paved surface. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended for everyone in the family — more on that in the outfit section below

Best Time for Photos at Solana Beach Trails

The best time for photography at the Solana Beach trail is during the last hour to ninety minutes before sunset. The late afternoon light at this location is extraordinary — it comes in low and warm across the lagoon, catching the native vegetation and the open trail in a way that creates a soft, golden quality that is deeply flattering and completely beautiful in photographs. The lagoon views in particular look stunning in the golden hour light, with the warm tones of the setting sun reflecting off the water and the sky.

Morning sessions are also a good option at this location, particularly for families with younger children who do better earlier in the day. The morning light along the lagoon is soft and even, the trail is quiet and uncrowded, and the atmosphere is peaceful in a way that sets a relaxed tone for the session from the very beginning.

Unlike some beach locations where the crowd level in the afternoon can be a significant factor, the Solana Beach trail tends to stay relatively quiet and uncrowded throughout the day — which is one of its most practical advantages as a photography location and one of the things that makes sessions here feel so relaxed and unhurried.

Outfits for a Solana Beach Trails Session

The Solana Beach trail is a natural, earthy environment — and outfits that reflect that character always photograph best here. Think casual and comfortable rather than dressed up, with earthy and natural tones that complement the greens, browns, and warm golds of the surrounding landscape.

Colors that work particularly well at this location include olive green, tan, cream, warm brown, rust, terracotta, sage, and other natural earth tones. Soft neutrals and muted pastels also work beautifully. These colors sit harmoniously within the natural environment rather than competing with it, and they tend to produce a warm, cohesive gallery with a timeless quality.

Avoid very bright or bold colors, large logos, or busy patterns — these tend to draw the eye away from the natural surroundings and can feel out of place in a trail environment. Similarly, very formal or dressed-up outfits — structured suits, formal dresses, heeled shoes — are not well suited to this location. The trail has a natural, relaxed character that calls for a more casual and comfortable approach.

Footwear is particularly important at this location. Because the trail is a natural dirt path with some uneven sections, comfortable closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended for everyone in the family — adults and children alike. Sneakers, trail shoes, or simple flats with grip all work well. Sandals, dress shoes, or any footwear without a firm sole are not recommended for comfort or safety on an uneven natural trail. Please plan your footwear carefully — it makes a meaningful difference to how comfortable everyone feels during the session.

Is Solana Beach Trails Right for Your Family Session?

The Solana Beach trail works beautifully for families who love the outdoors and are comfortable on a natural dirt path. It is an excellent choice for families who want something genuinely different from a beach session — more nature, more texture, more of a sense of place — and who are drawn to a relaxed, exploratory session style rather than a more formal posed approach.

It is one of my favorite locations for San Diego engagement sessions as well — the natural surroundings, the open trail, and the quiet atmosphere create a portrait environment that is deeply personal and completely unhurried, and the images from this location have a warmth and an intimacy that more manicured settings cannot replicate.

If you are not sure whether this location is the right fit for your family — or if you have any mobility considerations that ma a natural uneven trail a concern — I am always happy to discuss alternatives. Here are a few other locations worth considering:

La Jolla Shores and Scripps Pier — the most popular coastal session location in San Diego, with the iconic Scripps Pier and wide sandy beach.

Batiquitos Lagoon Trail — a similarly beautiful nature trail setting in Carlsbad with a slightly more even surface, excellent for families who want a natural outdoor session with a little more walking comfort.

Balboa Park — a fully accessible and paved environment in the heart of San Diego with extraordinary architectural variety and beautiful gardens.

Old Poway Park — a charming rustic park in North County Poway with flat, easy access and a warm historic character.

Pets

Dogs are welcome on the Solana Beach trail and are a great fit for this location — the natural outdoor setting is one of the most pet-friendly environments I work at for family sessions. Dogs must remain on a leash at all times on the trail. If you are planning to bring your dog, I recommend having a second adult available to help manage them during the session so we can get a good mix of photographs with and without the pet. Please let me know in advance if you are planning to bring a dog so I can factor it into the session planning.

The Solana Beach trail is one of those locations that surprises families every time — they arrive expecting a simple nature walk and leave with a gallery full of genuine, beautiful images that feel completely unlike anything a beach or park session produces. If this sounds like the right fit for your family, I would love to help you plan it. Visit my San Diego mini sessions page for full details on pricing and availability, or reach out here and I will take care of everything — the timing, the route, the parking details — so all you have to do is show up and enjoy it.
